Spain has solidified its position as Europe’s fourth-largest market for plant-based foods, following Germany, the UK, and Italy. Driven by an increasing demand for sustainable choices, the domestic industry grew by 9.4% in 2023, with over a third of Spaniards consuming plant-based products and nearly half of all households incorporating plant-based milks into their daily diets.
According to a joint report by the Spanish plant-based food association Vegetales and International Financial Analysts (AFI), the sector's financial impact reaches far beyond retail sales. The industry demonstrates a powerful "multiplier effect": every €1 of gross value added (GVA) by the plant-based sector generates an additional €3.70 for the wider Spanish economy. Furthermore, for every direct job created, an additional 3.9 indirect and induced jobs are generated across the supply chain, significantly boosting regional employment.
This booming sector is also key to addressing future food security and climate challenges, particularly as Spain's population is projected to exceed 55 million by 2050. Plant-based production requires significantly less land and water while helping consumers reduce their individual carbon footprint by up to 2.1 tons of CO2 annually. To support this transition, Spain has nurtured a vibrant agrifood-tech ecosystem that boasts 420 startups, making it one of the most technologically advanced food hubs in Europe.
Government and European Union policies are further propelling this market expansion. Upcoming legislative initiatives, alongside potential VAT reductions on sustainable goods, are expected to accelerate consumer shifts toward healthier diets. To sustain this momentum, Vegetales, which includes major global brands like Oatly and Alpro, is calling for a dedicated national regulatory framework. Industry leaders emphasize that establishing clear quality standards and legal definitions will mitigate regulatory risks, foster technological innovation, and help the sector continue its dual role as an environmental savior and economic powerhouse.
